Fungal Toenails

Are you dealing with the discomfort of nail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis?

This prevalent nail condition affects 10-20% of the population and can be challenging to treat. The resilient fungal spores reside on, within, and beneath the nail, making eradication a complex process.

Onychomycosis manifests with a range of discolorations (yellow, white, green) and leads to nails becoming brittle, crumbly, and raised, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor. The visible effects can cause self-consciousness and prompt individuals to seek assistance.

Footwear provides an ideal breeding ground for fungus due to its dark, humid environment. Nail fungus is highly contagious and can easily transfer from contaminated pedicure tools to your toenails. It’s crucial to maintain clean, dry footwear and exercise caution with your foot care tools.

Early intervention is key. Seek professional treatment at the first signs of nail fungus, as its progressive nature may require more aggressive measures as the nail thickens and more of it becomes affected.

At Locke Street Minor Foot Surgery & Orthotics, we offer specialized treatments tailored to your unique needs:

  1. Topical Treatment: This involves daily application of a prescription-strength topical medication along with professional debridement (filing) of the affected toenails every 6-8 weeks. This regimen enhances the penetration of the medicine until the fungus is eliminated.

  2. Oral Medication: Your family doctor may prescribe an oral anti-fungal medicine, considered the gold standard for treatment. It works by eliminating the fungus from the inside out. Monthly blood tests are advised to monitor liver function. This treatment continues until all affected nails have grown out, which may take 6-12 months.

  3. Total Nail Removal: In severe or medication-intolerant cases, surgical removal is an effective solution. After applying local anesthesia, the affected toenail is painlessly removed along with the underlying fungal debris. An anti-fungal cream is applied to the nail bed 1-2 months after the procedure to ensure any remaining fungus is eliminated. A new toenail will grow in within 6-12 months.

To prevent future issues, follow these recommendations:

  • Use sanitized and properly sterilized pedicure tools.
  • Allow footwear to thoroughly dry before wearing again to prevent potential fungal growth.
  • Ensure your toes have ample room in your footwear.
  • Change your socks daily or more frequently if they become damp.
  • Consider using a UV light sterilizer for your shoes to reduce fungal spores.
