Hallux Rigidus / Hallux Limitus
Hallux rigidus/limitus is a condition affecting the joint of the big toe, characterized by degenerative arthritic changes over time.
Initially, it may present as decreased joint motion (hallux limitus). As the condition progresses, the joint can become completely rigid and extremely painful (hallux rigidus).
Structural abnormalities (genetic or from ill-fitting footwear) and biomechanical issues contribute to this condition. These factors place excessive stress on the joint, leading to arthritic changes.
The impact of hallux rigidus/limitus on everyday activities can be substantial. The big toe plays a crucial role in our movement, and any motion in this joint can become excruciating. Depending on the extent of degenerative changes, some patients may require surgical intervention, which could involve joint fusion or replacement.
Distinguishing between hallux rigidus and limitus hinges on the degree of motion in the big toe. If the extension is limited to 15 degrees or less, it is considered hallux rigidus. If it extends beyond 15 degrees but remains below the standard 65 degrees, it is categorized as hallux limitus.
At Locke Street Minor Foot Surgery & Orthotics, we offer specialized treatments:
Shoe Modifications: We recommend footwear with a spacious toe box to alleviate pressure on the enlarged joint. Stiff-soled shoes can also reduce excessive bending of the stiff toe.
Orthotics with Rigid Morton’s Extension: This specialized orthotic features a firm extension beneath the big toe, minimizing excessive motion that may irritate a stiff joint.
Injection Therapy: A steroid injection can effectively reduce inflammation and pain in a stiff big toe joint.
Taping: Sports tape is utilized to immobilize and minimize movement in the big toe, thereby alleviating pain during activity.
To prevent or manage this condition, consider:
- Proper Fitting Footwear: Ensure the toe box accommodates your foot comfortably.
- Orthotics with Rigid Morton’s Extension: This provides both support and stabilization for the foot.
- Footwear with Rigid Soles: Less bending in the affected toe minimizes the risk of re-injury.
Your foot health is our priority.
