Heel Spur / Plantar Calcaneal Spur / Bone Spurs

What is a Heel Spur?

A heel spur, also known as a calcaneal spur, is a small bony growth that forms on the heel bone (calcaneus).

Continuous pressure and excessive pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone can lead to the accumulation of calcium deposits on the underside of the heel, resulting in a bone spur. This can make it challenging to put weight on the affected heel, making activities like walking or exercising difficult.

What Can Cause a Heel Spur?

Several factors can contribute to the development of a heel spur:

  • Engaging in over-training or high-impact sports/activities, leading to arch strain and potentially heel spurs.
  • Experiencing recent weight gain.
  • Certain medical conditions, such as Ankylosing Spondylitis.
  • Poor biomechanics of the foot, like overpronation or having flat feet.

How is a Heel Spur Diagnosed?

A radiological examination (X-ray) is employed to determine the presence of a heel spur.
