High Arches

What Are High Arches?

High arches, also known as pes cavus, is a condition characterized by a highly convex shaped arch in the foot when standing. This creates a significant space between the arch and the ground.

What Can Cause High Arches?

Several factors can contribute to the development of high arches:

  • Rigid foot structure
  • Injury or trauma
  • Arthritis
  • Specific neurological diseases or disorders such as cerebral palsy or Charcot-Marie-Tooth
  • Family history

What Are the Symptoms of High Arches?

While many individuals with high arches do not experience foot pain or related issues, some may be more susceptible to certain foot conditions and discomforts, including:

  • Achy or fatigued feet
  • Pain in the arch, heel, or ankle
  • Ankle instability
  • Calluses and/or corns
  • Pain in the knee, hip, or lower back

How Can You Manage High Arches?

It’s important to note that there isn’t a definitive “treatment” for high arches, as it is primarily a structural aspect of the foot.

Altering this structure could disrupt the natural functioning of your feet. However, having your foot assessed by a specialized foot expert can provide valuable insights into how your feet operate. Wearing well-fitting footwear and potentially using custom orthotics may help alleviate the symptoms associated with high arches, although they won’t alter the underlying structure.

Recommendations for Prevention:

Preventing the development of high arches can be challenging, as it is often influenced by genetic factors or certain diseases/disorders that may not be avoidable.

Nonetheless, choosing appropriately fitting footwear and considering custom orthotics can assist in minimizing discomfort associated with high arches, even though they won’t alter the structural shape of your foot.
