Mucoid Cyst / Cystic Growths
A digital mucoid, or myxoid, cyst is a small fluid-filled bump near a toe joint or nail. It is generally benign and may be linked to joint changes. An examination is needed to distinguish it from other lumps.
What you may notice
- A smooth, sometimes translucent bump
- Pressure discomfort in shoes
- A groove in the nearby nail or occasional fluid leakage
How we assess it
We check the location, skin and nail, and whether the cyst appears connected to a joint. An uncertain diagnosis or recurrent drainage may require referral.
Treatment and next steps
A confirmed cyst that causes no difficulty may be monitored. Footwear changes and protective padding can reduce rubbing. Persistent, recurrent or troublesome cysts may need specialist treatment. Several procedures are available, but recurrence is possible. Do not squeeze, cut or puncture it yourself.
When to seek care
Redness, warmth, pain or drainage from the area needs prompt assessment because a cyst near a joint can become infected.
