Varicose Veins/Edema

Varicose veins are enlarged surface veins, often visible in the legs. Edema means swelling from fluid in the tissues. They can occur together, but swelling has many possible causes, including medication effects and heart, kidney or circulation problems.

What you may notice

  • Visible, enlarged or twisted veins
  • Heavy or aching legs
  • Swollen ankles, tight shoes or skin changes

How we assess it

We review foot and skin concerns and check whether medical or vascular assessment is needed. New swelling should not automatically be attributed to standing all day or to varicose veins.

Treatment and next steps

Care depends on the cause. Movement, elevation and properly selected compression may help some people, but compression requires assessment and is not suitable for everyone. Vein procedures and treatment of underlying medical conditions belong with the appropriate medical specialist. We can help identify foot-care needs and the next step.

When to seek care

Sudden swelling in one leg with pain, warmth or redness needs urgent assessment. If swelling accompanies chest pain, breathlessness or coughing blood, call 911.
